Dear colleagues and friends

The 29th Congress of the Scandinavian Society for Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (SSAI) in Gothenburg was a great success! I use this occasion to one more time thank Helene Seeman-Lodding and her crew for all the work and clever leadership!

The baton for the SSAI 2009 meeting in Odense, Denmark has been passed on to Palle Toft and his colleagues. I know they are already way into the plans and will make this meeting a new SSAI success. Please, mark the dates and join the meeting. Be there to plan and decide on the future of Scandinavian anaesthesiology.

SSAI is the umbrella organisation for all the Scandinavian national societies of anaesthesiology. In our recently revised Bylaws we say that one of our aims is “to safeguard the professional interests of the medical speciality anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine and its practitioners in the Scandinavian countries”. At the same time we want to be a forum for scientific discussions and co-operation and to exchange ideas in the fields of anaesthesia, intensive care medicine, pain therapy, emergency medicine and pre-hospital care. In short; we care about all the 4 pillars of our speciality!

The healthcare systems in our countries are constantly being stressed by financial limitations and proposals for change. SSAI wants to play an active role and help the national societies adjust to the new times. Hence, we have decided to make a  Position Paper on the future of our speciality, including both organisation, training, clinical practice and research issues. The Task Force will be established this Fall, and include the SSAI Officers and the Committee chairs. The real work will start at the January 2008 Board meeting with the out-line of the Position Paper being agreed upon. The work will lead up to plenary sessions and workshops at the SSAI 2009 meeting in Odense.

Make sure you follow this work and use the occasion to present your own opinions. It’s your speciality and your future!

Jul 20 2007 FATE - Focused Assessed Transthoracic Echocardiography

During the last years there has been a growing interest for “Point of Care Ultrasound” in critical care medicine. FATE (Focused Assessed Transthoracic Echocardiography) is goal-directed echocardiography for cardio-pulmonary optimisation in the ICU and critical care environment. At Aarhus University Hospital, Skejby, Denmark a FATE educational program has been offered all members of the medical staff and the FATE-protocol is now mandatory when admitting acute patients to the ICU.
The essential elements of FATE can be printed on a double-sided laminated card and carried in the pocket. Thousands of FATE cards have recently been distributed worldwide and can be requested free of charge from the website: http://fate-protocol.com/

Jun 15 2007 Scandinavian influence in UEMS

During the Euroanaesthesia congress in Munich this week, Dr. Jannicke Mellin-Olsen from Bærum Hospital, Norway, was elected as President of the Section and Board of Anaesthesiology UEMS (Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes / European Union of Medical Specialists).

This is an important position since the UEMS is the only official advisor
to the EU system in relevant matters, such as guidelines, education and quality. UEMS also works closely with ESA (European Society of Anaesthesiolgy) in other fields.

Jannicke Mellin-Olsen is a former president of the Norwegian Society and has been a SSAI Board member the last ten years. She is also a member of the WFSA Education Committee, travelling the world to participate in educational programmes, in addition to being active in several boards of the Norwegian Medical Association.

Prof. Seppo Alahuhta from Oulu, Finland, was elected as Vice President. He has served as the president of the Finnish Society of Anaesthesiologists and he has also been a SSAI Board member. He is a member of the educational committee of the SSAI.

Dr. Ellen O'Sullivan, Ireland, was elected as Honorary Secretary and Treasurer.

The term of office is four years.

Report from the 11th meeting of the Scandinavian Critical Care Trials Group in Lund 8 – 9 February 2007

Mar 1 2007 Welcome to the new homepage of The Scandinavian Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine.

SSAI is an umbrella organisation of the national societies of anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine in the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. ACTA Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica is the official journal of the Society. At the moment the impact factor of the journal is 1,84.

My aim, as the new webmaster of the SSAI webpage, is that the webpage at all times shall be updated with information that is short and concise. But to come even close to this goal, I am totally dependant on help from you, the members of the Society. Give input!

Together with the head of the Research committee in SSAI, Anders Åneman, and  with technical support from
Expertmaker there is an intention to develop www-based research tools. www-based surveys will be facilitated. I believe that this is exciting, and it will give the members of the Society new research opportunities. I do hope that this tool will promote multicentre studies accross Scandinavia.

These resources, are funded by the SSAI, and research involving all Scandinavian countries will cause a minimal financial burden on individual projects.

Is this of interest to you?

The Committees have needs that still are not ellucidated.  In my opinion only fantasy (and perhaps money) is limiting. I believe, as an inborn optimist, that until proven otherwise nothing is impossible. I assure you that without optimism this webpage project once again will be a failure.
