PRESIDENT’S CORNER.

Dear colleagues and friends

It is 2008 and a full year of new opportunities lay before us!

This week-end the Board of the Scandinavian Society for Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (SSAI) had its annual meeting in Copenhagen. Among other things we discussed the future of our speciality; anaesthesiology. We had some very fruitful discussions and agreed to continue to work on the Position Paper on the future of Scandinavian anaesthesiology aimed to be finished in 2009. Based on our Bylaws it is clear that one of our aims is “to safeguard the professional interests of the medical speciality anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine and its practitioners in the Scandinavian countries”. At the same time we want to be a forum for scientific discussions and co-operation and to exchange ideas in the fields of anaesthesia, intensive care medicine, pain therapy, emergency medicine and pre-hospital care. In short; we care about all the 4 pillars of our speciality! We have decided to make a Position Paper on the future of our speciality, including both organization, training, clinical practice and research issues. But, should we focus on all the 4 pillars in a similar way? Are not anaesthesia and intensive care medicine to be considered core business, and emergency medicine and pain therapy only minor and less important parts?  If we are to share emergency medicine and pain therapy with others, how should we make sure our contribution is the correct one and benefit the patients? A 5 member Task Force will start up the work and use the whole Board as a Reference Group.

To understand more how anaesthesiologists work in Scandinavia and what their preferences are, we plan a survey for all members of SSAI to participate in. Please follow the development on www.ssai.info

This year a new SSAI Training Program in Advanced Emergency Medicine (AEM) is launched. For further details please check www.ssai.info . The final dead-line has been changed so hurry up and send your application now!
