The Scandinavian Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (SSAI) co-ordinates an advanced Inter-Nordic education program in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine. The education programme aims at specialists in anaesthesiology with interest in cardiothoracic and vascular anaesthesia and intensive care medicine.

During the training period, the Steering Committee for this programme organizes four-five theoretical courses, which will be held in different Nordic Countries. The course language will be English. The trainees must register needed practical skills by completing a logbook. It is important that the trainees are faced with all aspects of cardiothoracic and vascular anaesthesia together with relevant intensive care medicine. Therefore, it might be necessary to divide the programme between two or more institutions to accomplish all aspects.  The training period includes a one-month exchange program at a University Hospital cardiothoracic department in another country. This exchange programme may be divided in two sections of two weeks each. At the end of the program the trainee must present a minor research project. Trainees completing the two-year training programme and passing the final examination will receive a Diploma in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine issued by the SSAI.

The trainee must have an employment at a Department of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Intensive Care in one of the Nordic or Baltic countries. It would be preferable if the trainees have some experience in the field. The host clinic should allocate a local tutor/mentor for the clinical training and for the research project during the programme. The department may choose to divide the tasks (clinical training and research) between two specialists. All expenses for the programme (including travelling, accommodation and a fee for each of the courses) should be covered by the host clinic. The exchange department should provide tutors approved by the steering committee.

The total fee of all courses is € 8,000 and includes venue, lunch/coffee breaks, dinners and accommodation but not travel. The organizers reserve the right to adjust the fee pending on cost and currency changes.

Applicants are selected according to their affiliation, experience and motivation by the discretion of the steering committee of the training program. Membership of the SSAI is mandatory and proof of membership should be attached with the application.

Further information, the contract and the registration form are provided in the link section at the end of the page. Do not hesitate to contact  one of the steering group members. Applications should be sent to the programme director. Applications for the third program are now invited. The training program is limited to 15 – 20 trainees. The training period is two years, starting at September 1st 2017.
