Intensive Care Medicine
Call for Applications for the 14th Scandinavian Training Program in Intensive Care Medicine
The training period is 2 years, starting January 2012. The training program is limited to 30 trainees. During the 2-year period the trainee will be appointed a host clinic and a local tutor. The host clinic will employ the trainee in an appropriate position (i.e in an intensive care unit) during the training program. A minimum of one year of clinical training should be done at a university intensive care unit. During the training period the SSAI organises 6 courses. These courses will circulate in all the Scandinavian countries and the common language will be English.
To achieve the goal of creating a close networking atmosphere the participants are expected to participate in the scheduled sessions and social functions at the course sites. The training period includes an exchange program with an intensive care unit in another country. The candidates will also have to complete an “ICU project” during their two-year training. This project could be a small research project, quality assurance or development project or a literature review of agreed subject. The topic must be related to intensive care medicine. If the trainee has already an ongoing project it may be included such as part of an on-going or recently passed PhD research programme. The estimated amount of work for this projects could correspond to 2-3 months full time work. Please feel free to ask the chairman of the SSAI-IC training program or your national representatives in the Steering Committee for an advice (see below).
The trainee must attend the examination for the European Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine and acquire the European Diploma in Intensive Care (EDIC) awarded by the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine. Trainees completing the 2-year training program, including all the 6 courses, the ICU project, the ICU exchange program and the EDIC will receive a Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine from the SSAI. All expenses for this program (including travelling, accommodation and a fee for each course) have to be covered by the host clinic. Other arrangements concerning finances has to be approved by the steering group. The total cost for all 6 courses are estimated to about 9000 Euros, not including travel expenses. Applicants must be young specialists with relevant training in anaesthesiology. They are selected according to their affiliation, academic merits, clinical skills and motivation by the discretion of the steering committee of the training program. Specialists from other disciplines may apply, but a minimum of 12 consecutive months of anaesthesia training before being accepted to the program is required. Membership in SSAI is mandatory and proof of membership has to be attached with the application. If this is not done before deadline of application, the application will not be handled.
